Austin artist Valerie Fowler creates “emotional abstraction” oil paintings and drawings that show her love for the earth and concern for its fragile state. She often chooses to portray subjects inspired by nature. Her complex, intricate settings present a world filled with beauty, but also its underlying vulnerability.
Born and raised in Houston, Fowler is a second generation artist. Her father was noted sculptor, Bob Fowler. She moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas and earned a B.A. in Art. For the last three decades, she actively has pursued her art, creating murals for Whole Food Markets in three different states and doing illustrations for books, magazines and CD covers, along with her painting. She and her musician husband, Brian Beattie, collaborated on a full stage musical project that was performed in Austin and toured the East and West coasts. Fowler recently was named the 2018 Festival Artist by the Texas Book Festival.
