Travis Louie grew up in Queens, New York, where he spent his early childhood making drawings and watching “Atomic Age” sci-fi and horror movies. Louie forms his own fantasy worlds in his paintings, much of the work derived from drawings and stories in his journals. For each character, he creates eclectic and eccentric biographical histories. Louie’s visual style is influenced greatly by German Expressionist and Film Noir motion pictures from the Silent Era to the late 1950’s. To achieve the dramatic mood in his paintings, he produces them primarily in black and white or limited color. Louie cites genre films, circus sideshows, old Vaudeville magic acts and Victorian portraits, among others, as inspirations and continually produces work that celebrates oddities.
